Abstract
The article examines the impact of the development of transport infrastructure on the economic growth of the southern coastal cities of Ukraine in the nineteenth century. The relevance of the topic lies in the need to understand the historical processes that shaped the role of these cities as important trade and production centers, which had a significant impact on the economy of the region and the country as a whole. The purpose of the study is to identify the main factors that contributed to the transformation of Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson into key transport hubs integrated into the national and international trade and transport networks. The study employs a qualitative analysis of archival documents, official reports, and scholarly papers to explore the importance of transport infrastructure in the development of these cities. Both general trends in the expansion of transport networks and specific political and economic initiatives that influenced their development are considered. Particular attention is paid to the role of municipal governments and zemstvos in the construction of transport routes, including railways, and their impact on foreign trade. The research shows that an efficient transport network, which combined rail, sea, and river routes, was crucial for the economic growth of the region. The policies of city governments, supported by the zemstvos, promoted the development of railways, ensuring the integration of cities into the broader economic context. The findings emphasize the importance of a well-coordinated transport infrastructure for the economic development of both the cities and the region as a whole. The analysis confirms that improvements in transport were not only essential for trade and industry, but also contributed to overall social and economic progress. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Odesa, Kherson, and Mykolaiv were cities with well-developed port infrastructure and substantial profits, playing a major role in the life of the southern region and the empire as a whole.
