Abstract

This paper investigates the “Four Gates – Forty Stations” (Dört Kapı Kırk Makam) schema in Bektashism as a structured cognitive model that encodes a distinctly religious form of human development. From the standpoint of analytic philosophy, the study examines the semantic structure and epistemic function of this symbolic system, arguing that it constitutes a rule-governed framework of meaning within a specific religious language game. Rather than treating the gates and stations as merely allegorical or mystical expressions, the analysis interprets them as conceptually articulated stages that reflect an internal logic of moral and ontological progression. The paper draws on tools from philosophical semantics, intentionality theory, and structuralist methodology to elucidate how Bektashism organizes spiritual knowledge and experience. In doing so, it highlights the cognitive depth and philosophical relevance of mystical categories often considered opaque to analytic inquiry. The conclusion was a statement that the doctrine of the Turkic Sufi order of Bektashi about the “Four Gates – Forty Stations” is not just a poetic, symbolic or religious construct, but it is a cognitively multifaceted and semantically structured model of the spiritual development of a person who has chosen the path of perfection. It was emphasized that the structure of the gates corresponds to the idea of gradual overcoming of dualism: between subject and object, external and internal, form and essence. It was also noted that the model of Bektashi works as a tool of self-transformation through multi-level integration: affective, cognitive and bodily. Ultimately, this study confirms that mystical heterodox Islamic traditions, such as Bektashi, can make a significant contribution to modern philosophical discussions about the nature of meaning, religious understanding and the structure of human spiritual cognition.
